Collecting inspiration from a variety of sources is a good starting point for nearly all of the creative projects. Design school taught me the value of having a giant shoe-box set aside for collecting example of great design. I turned into a graphic design huntress every time I left the house. Upon my return I would toss clippings, business cards, brochures, booklets, magazines and packaging I had collected into the box - till the box was bursting at the seams. Then I would start another box.
